So what is a buyers agent? Some of you may have heard the term but what does it actually mean? As real estate professionals we work with both buyers and sellers. There is usually alot of information on selling your home and what an agent can do to assist you.
As a buyer you will still need the services of a real estate professional. You can reach out to the salesperson who has the property listed however their first responsibility is to their client, the seller. I always advice people to find their own agents to work with. You can do the same thing a home owner wishing to sell would do, INTERVIEW a realtor! I know this may sound bizarre as it is not that common but it is a wise move.
Now how to find out
Have any of your friends or relatives recently purchased? Ask them for a referral. Do a google search of realtors in the area. Not the area you are in but the area you are looking to move into. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and speak to them. I know that the convenience of email, text, messenger, etc has become the norm but purchasing a house is a huge step and you will want to have that personal contact and feel comfortable with the person you are working with. If you feel like this is a bit uncomfortable go ahead and send a message with some questions and ask them to call you back. This could also be a test to see if they do respond 🙂
Here are some questions you may want to ask;
What areas do you work in? You want to use someone who is familiar with the area.
What is your availability? This may sound like a simple question but some agents have part time jobs or may just have a hectic schedule that may not match yours.
How long have you been in real estate? I’m not knocking newer agents as they are some of the hardest working people out there but make sure they have enough experience to assist you.
Are you familiar with working with first time buyers? In todays market I personally feel this is important. It is a fast and every evolving market and you want someone who is prepared for this challenge, who can assist your needs.
